Nickel City Sushi & Sports Bar is a beloved local gem. It sits tucked away on the end of a strip mall off Park Boulevard in Pinellas Park. The unassuming locale is easily missed but you don’t know what you’re passing up. Nickel City has quite the local following because of its laid back vibe, selection of billiards, and scratch-made Asian cuisine.
Nickel City Sushi
My bestie raved about Nickel City’s menu, and a billiards bar known for their Asian food piqued my interest. It’s an eclectic mix of traditional American bar food and Thai/Vietnamese. The owners of Nickel City also own the Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Que Huong, that’s right next door, hence the strong Asian influence on the menu that leave your tastebuds excited for more. On a recent visit with friends, we sampled a number of dishes on the menu, including the sushi, curry, soup, and fried rice. If this place isn’t already on your list to try, it needs to be.

Sushi
When you visit Nickel City, go hungry, because there are tons of sushi rolls to choose from. Plus, it’s all dirt cheap and you get plentiful pieces with every roll. We ordered the Buffalo Roll ($8.95 for 12 pieces), which was a panko-fried roll with chicken tempura, avocado, and cream cheese, and drizzled with a combination of spicy mayo, eel sauce, and Buffalo sauce. The saucy mixture burst with flavor and the panko crust made for crunchy bites. Our spider roll ($12.95 for 10 pieces) had massive pieces of soft shell crab that balanced well with the eel sauce and Masago on top. And for those who aren’t fans of nori, Nickel City offers rice wrappers to sub on any of their sushi rolls.

Soup and Thai Food
Being owned by a Vietnamese family, we wanted to sample some of the Asian soups. We ordered a kid’s pho ($9.95) with chicken, expecting a small bowl of soup, but the portion was enough for an adult meal. It was loaded with noodles and veggies, and came with a whole plate of accoutrements on the side. My Tom Yum soup ($5) had the most flavorful broth with juicy pieces of chicken and mushrooms floating about. The soup was not as sour as I was expecting but I would order it again simply for the broth.
I can never pass up curry on a menu and the fact that Nickel City offers three different Thai curries ($13.95) made my stomach celebrate. I’ve had both the Panang and the Massaman curries here, and both are warm, aromatic, and laced with lots of coconut. I order my curry with tofu, but you can select from chicken, beef, pork, veggie, shrimp, or a combination for your dinner.
Burgers, Wings, and More
If you’re not a fan of Asian food, fear not. Nickel City offers a selection of American eats like burgers, Buffalo chicken dip, Phillies, wings, and sandwiches. There’s literally something for everyone’s palate.
