FAIRLAWN — When the owners of Ki Asian Cuisine opened in the former House of Hunan at 2717 W. Market St. in late 2023, they brought more than 20 years of restaurant experience with them.
“We are a family-owned business; we used to own the Happy Family Buffet restaurant on Manchester Road,” co-owner Zoe Liu said, adding that her husband Lin’s experience is in the kitchen, while her area of expertise is in restaurant management.
“Our lease was up [at Happy Family] and in September 2022, [House of Hunan] closed,” she said. “I had been here to eat and we liked the restaurant.”
After six months of remodeling, Ki Asian Cuisine — the word “ki” means happiness and fortune — opened its doors in November 2023. The spacious and elegant dining and bar areas of the restaurant are immediately inviting, and Liu said the restaurant also has a party room with seating for up to 50 people. Ki Asian Cuisine is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Liu said that while the restaurant has a robust in-house dinner crowd, carry-out and Door Dash options are also available. She added that the business is in the process of obtaining a liquor license, with soft-drink options only available currently.
The innovative Ki Asian Cuisine menu offers a wide array of both traditional Chinese and Japanese dishes, she said, including customized sushi and sashimi selections, soups and salads, teriyaki, and several varieties of ramen.
While some people have been hesitant to dive into the less common Japanese dishes, Liu noted that Ki Asian Cuisine has set itself apart from other Asian restaurants in this area by offering both options.
“In this area, Chinese is very popular,” she said. “But a lot of people are afraid of the raw [Japanese menu items].”
Liu said Ki Asian Cuisine has daily fresh fish deliveries Monday through Friday, adding that the staff selects the freshest ingredients and uses traditional Japanese culinary skills to prepare and present the most authentic, high-quality dishes.
She said Ki Asian Cuisine’s preparation of its ramen dishes is also distinctive.
“Most use one or maybe two broths for all ramen,” Liu explained. “We use a different broth for each; a pork broth for our Tonkotsu ramen, miso broth for our veggie ramen, chicken broth for our chicken ramen, and beef broth for beef ramen.”
She said popular dishes from among Ki Asian Cuisine’s traditional Chinese menu include selections like Hunan Chicken; its “top-seller,” General Tso’s Chicken; a full menu of chef’s specials; and the $8.95 lunch special — available Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. — which includes an entree, fried rice and egg drop soup.
Liu added that the Ki Asian Cuisine menu contains no MSG and also has several gluten-free and food allergy sensitive options. Gift certificates are also available, and the restaurant is currently offering its Happy Hour special from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, where customers can buy a maki roll and get another for 50% off.
