Trendy asian food served at cafe in Elmridge Center in Greece NY
Amy Blair and Rachel Wang have some experience when it comes to serving up trendy Asian fare; they are among the partners who opened Donutchew in Penfield’s BayTowne Plaza in early 2024. The franchise restaurant focuses on mochi donuts, a fusion of traditional American doughnuts and Japanese mochi, as well as Korean corn dogs embellished with many different coatings.
Now, they’ve teamed up to open Asian Street Cafe in Elmridge Center in Greece. The counter service restaurant serves a variety of popular savory and sweet dishes from around East Asia.
Since the restaurant opened on Dec. 21, the savory best sellers have been ramen bowls and rice bowls. Ramen bowls are made with a choice of protein and miso, soybean, shoyu, tonkotsu or dan dan broth. All are garnished with sweet corn, edamame, bean sprouts, bok choy, dried seaweed, mushrooms and a soft boiled egg.
Several fried rice preparations are offered; braised rice bowls are made with cucumber slices, hard boiled egg, soy garlic sauce, toasted sesame seeds and a choice of protein. Korean fried chicken is double floured to make it extra crispy, and is served with several different sauces.
Kids especially enjoy Korean corn dogs, which can be coated with additions like hash browns, hot cheetos and blue Taki chips. Inside, they have an all-beef hot dog, stretchy mozzarella cheese or half of each.
The menu also leans into desserts ― minus the donuts found in the Penfield restaurant. Croffles, a hybrid of a croissant and a waffle popularized in South Korea, can be topped with fresh fruit, whipped cream and other sweet possibilities. Other desserts include egg tarts, macarons, crepe cakes and mochi ice cream. It also offers a variety of packaged Asian snacks. The restaurant also serves a large variety of bubble teas.
While there’s some overlap with the Penfield restaurant’s menu, the fare at the Greece restaurant is completely different, Blair said. “Greece is an all-new menu,” she said. The owners are natives of China; everything, including their kimchi, is made in house, she said.
The cozy space in Elmridge Plaza is near the mall’s other food establishments; it was previously home to a bakery. The bright, inviting restaurant is geared primarily for takeout and delivery, but has a few tables for dining in.
